Jewish Heritage in Spain

Sephardic Spain: Five Cities and Their Jewish Quarters

What survives, which tour shows it, and what each costs.

Spain’s Jewish heritage is Sepharad, the communities that lived here until 1492, when Ferdinand and Isabella gave the Jews the choice of conversion or exile. What survives is concentrated in five cities: Córdoba and Toledo, which keep the three medieval synagogues still standing in Spain, Seville’s old quarter, and the Calls of Girona and Barcelona. The most reviewed tour is Córdoba a Pie’s visit to the Jewish Quarter and the Mosque-Cathedral, from $58 a person as of October 2026, rated 4.6 from 5,753 reviews.

Map of Spain marking Girona, Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba and Seville
Toledo is a day trip from Madrid; Córdoba and Seville are under an hour apart by fast train; Girona is a day trip from Barcelona.

Which city, for what

  • Córdoba. The synagogue, completed in 1315 in Mudéjar plaster, is one of three medieval synagogues still standing in Spain, in the lanes of the Judería beside the Mosque-Cathedral. It is closed on Mondays.
  • Toledo. The other two: El Tránsito, now the Sephardic Museum, and Santa María la Blanca, in the upper and lower Jewish quarters.
  • Seville. The old Jewish quarter is today’s Santa Cruz, around the Calle Agua and the Murillo gardens; little of its Jewish fabric survives, and a guide tells what the streets do not.
  • Girona. The Call, one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe, and the Museum of Jewish History; the city of Nahmanides.
  • Barcelona. The Call in the Gothic Quarter, with the ancient synagogue and the house associated with the Rashba.

In Córdoba, Córdoba a Pie’s tour is mostly the Mosque-Cathedral with the Jewish Quarter around it; the synagogue itself is a short walk away, open every day except Monday. jewish-walking-tour.com compares the Córdoba walks in more detail.

In Toledo, the coach trip from Madrid is the easy day; the private walk with a specialist guide covers both Jewish quarters properly, for a group of up to ten.

In Girona and Barcelona, Girona Experience includes the Museum of Jewish History; Barcelona Dreaming’s private walk includes the ancient synagogue, whose entrance involves a few steps.

Before you go

  • Mondays in Córdoba. The synagogue closes every Monday, and in the evenings from 15 June to 15 September.
  • Dress. Shoulders and knees covered for the Mosque-Cathedral and the churches on the Toledo tours.
  • Pace. Toledo is steep and its lanes are cobbled; the coach tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.

"Jaime provided a very informative tour of the key sites in Cordoba with helpful input and suggestions as we walked through the old town. He was also very responsive to questions. An enjoyable experience."

Kevin United States

"Both sections of the tour were interesting and informative. Jamie & Rafa had different styles but were both entertaining as well as informative"

Geoffrey United Kingdom

"Jaimee was excellent. The best guide we hade over the last 10 weeks touring Europe. He explained history with good humour and with depth of knowledge. The Mosque- Cathedral is a must see as well as the Alcazar gardens. Unfortunately the building is undergoing reconstruction but we really enjoyed the gardens and the whole tour. Value for money for sure. Steve"

Steven Australia

"Jaime was very knowledgeable and informative with the Mosque."

Rita United States

"Jaime was very informative and clearly had a deep knowledge of his subject. He engaged the group with questions, anecdotes, and humor. It was a great tour!"

"We had two fantastic tour guides, Estefanía and Rafa. They answered all our questions and made the visit very enjoyable. Highly recommended."

Jose Spain

"The only disappointment was that we had a ticket that included a tour of the Alcázar, and it was under renovation :-( We were not informed. That said, the gardens and the Cathedral Mosque are magnificent."
