Jewish Heritage in Portugal

Portugal: A History Mostly Hidden, and Where It Shows

Lisbon, Porto, Tomar, Belmonte and Castelo de Vide, with the tours compared.

Portugal’s Jewish heritage is mostly a history of what was hidden: in December 1496 King Manuel I’s edict gave the Jews until October 1497 to convert or leave, and the converts, the New Christians, often kept their faith in secret for generations. Few buildings survive in Lisbon, so a guide matters more here than anywhere: the best-rated walk is the Jewish Cultural Center Rua da Judiaria’s, led by an archaeologist, from $87 a person as of October 2026, rated 4.9 from 166 reviews. Beyond Lisbon, Tomar keeps a 15th-century synagogue and Belmonte a community that came back into the open in the 1990s.

Tomar and Coimbra sit between Lisbon and Porto; Belmonte and Castelo de Vide are near the Spanish border.

Where to go

  • Lisbon. The Alfama, the Baixa, the Rossio and its memorial to the 1506 massacre: most of the physical heritage was lost to the forced conversions, the Inquisition and the 1755 earthquake, and the walks tell what the streets no longer show.
  • Porto. Jewish heritage going back to the 12th century, and the Kadoorie Mekor Haim synagogue, opened in the 1930s, one of the largest in Europe.
  • Tomar. The synagogue, built between 1430 and 1460, the oldest well-preserved synagogue in Portugal, now the Abraham Zacuto Portuguese-Jewish Museum.
  • Belmonte. A town whose crypto-Jewish community kept its faith in secret for centuries; its synagogue was founded in 1996 and its Jewish Museum, the first in Portugal, opened in 2005.
  • Castelo de Vide and Coimbra. An old Jewish quarter near the Spanish border, and the university city where the walks tell of the Inquisition and of a former student who saved thousands of refugees.

In Lisbon, the Rua da Judiaria walk is the group choice, in English; its guide is a native speaker of Portuguese and Hebrew. Lisbon Walker’s private walk follows the history from the Praça do Comércio to the Rossio. jewish-walking-tour.com compares the Lisbon walks in more detail.

In Porto, EFun Tours’ walk stays outside the synagogue and the Jewish Heritage Museum, which are not included; AtWill’s private half-day covers the Sephardic legacy of the old town.

For Belmonte, ARR Tours’ eleven-hour day from Lisbon is the only listed way there without a car: the Jewish Museum, with stops at Constância and Almourol Castle on the way back.

Before you go

  • Saturdays. Synagogues and Jewish museums in Portugal close on Saturdays and on Jewish holidays; check each site’s days before a long drive.
  • Hills. Lisbon’s Alfama and Porto’s old town are steep; most of these walks are not suitable for visitors with limited mobility.
  • Daylight. From October to March it gets dark from about 6 pm, so morning starts suit the longer tours.
