Jewish Kraków and Warsaw
A walk through Kazimierz and Podgórze, a walk along the Warsaw ghetto's surviving traces, and the ticket to the POLIN Museum.
Jewish Heritage in Poland
Poland: Where to Go and Which Tours Cover It
Kraków, Warsaw and the memorial sites, with the guided tours compared on what they include and what they cost.
Most Jewish heritage trips to Poland start in Kraków: a walk through Kazimierz, the old Jewish town, and Podgórze, where the occupiers set up the ghetto in 1941, then a guided visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, just under 70 km west of the city. Warsaw adds the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the few traces of the largest ghetto in occupied Europe. The tour most visitors reserve for the Memorial is Royal Cracow’s guided visit with transport from Kraków, from $20 a person as of October 2026, rated 4.5 from 42,034 reviews.

Where to go
- Kraków, Kazimierz. The Old Synagogue on Szeroka Street, from the end of the 15th century, is the oldest surviving example of Jewish religious architecture in Poland and is now a museum. Two hundred metres along the same street, the Remuh, completed in the 16th century, is the smallest of the historic synagogues and the only one still used for prayer, with its old cemetery behind it.
- Kraków, Podgórze. Across the Vistula, the former ghetto: Ghetto Heroes Square, a fragment of the ghetto wall, and Oskar Schindler’s enamel factory, now a museum of the city under occupation.
- Warsaw. Before the war the city had the largest Jewish community in Europe. The Nożyk Synagogue is the only one that survived; the POLIN Museum tells a thousand years of Polish Jewish history in eight galleries. See dates →
- The memorial sites. The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum near Oświęcim, west of Kraków, and Treblinka, in the forest north-east of Warsaw.

Royal Cracow runs the visit most people reserve, and its price is close to the cost of the transport alone. The start can fall anywhere between early morning and early afternoon: you choose a preferred time, and the confirmed one comes the day before.
Cracovia Viaggi is the one for Italian and Spanish speakers, and the only visit on this page that lists Monowitz, the third camp of the complex.
The salt mine combination fills eleven hours with two very different places. Some visitors prefer it for a short stay; others would rather keep the day for the Memorial alone.
In Kraków itself
Give Kazimierz and Podgórze a morning before or after the Memorial. Kraków Explorers’ 2.5-hour walk, from $18 and rated 4.8 from 1,965 reviews, covers the synagogues, the cemetery, Ghetto Heroes Square and the places used in Schindler’s List. jewish-walking-tour.com covers the Kraków walks in more detail, guide by guide. Tours with Ewa’s small-group visit adds the inside of Schindler’s Factory museum, from $50; its ticket is non-refundable.
In Warsaw
Robert’s Walking Tours starts at Grzybowski Square and passes the Nożyk Synagogue, the Korczak monument and the surviving fragments of the ghetto wall, about 3 km in two hours, from $13. The POLIN Museum ticket, $12 with an audio guide, is sold by the museum itself; plan for a morning there, and remember it is closed on Tuesdays.
Before you go

What Visitors Say
"The female tour guide was very helpful, on time to collect us and gave us all the information we needed. The coach was clean and at a good temperature. The male tour guide was very knowledgeable. Spoke clearly and explained everything about what you were seeing even made you think about those who walked those paths which was really moving. The pace started really well as we had a very early time slot but as things got busier our pace was still good however guides and groups behind us moved as close to us as possible, sometimes too close so as we couldn’t hear our guide fully as we could hear them speaking and we also felt rushed to look at exhibits. Other than this I would recommend booking this tour. An excellent way to learn history, very moving, extremely sad but memorable."
"Im on crutches and Marta was with the coach when it arrived and gave the front seats to us. Barbara was our guide around the camps she waited till all the group was together before beginning talks and understood when i stayed outside the some of the buildings due to internal staircases being very old and worn i could still hear her talking as we had headsets. Answered all the questions showed empathy when doing talks."
"A great tour, with a great tour guide. She was very informative. Communication was excellent from the operator too. Highly recommended."

Where to go, how the Memorial visit works, and what the tours cost as of October 2026.
Kraków, Warsaw and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial are the core of most trips. In Kraków, Kazimierz keeps the old synagogues and cemetery, and Podgórze the traces of the wartime ghetto and Schindler's Factory. Warsaw has the POLIN Museum and the surviving fragments of the ghetto wall. The Memorial near Oświęcim is a day trip from Kraków; start with the guided visit from Kraków.
Before the war it was Warsaw, home to the largest Jewish community in Europe; for a visitor today, it is Kraków's Kazimierz that keeps the most of the old Jewish town. Warsaw was largely destroyed and the Nożyk is its only surviving synagogue, while Kazimierz still has its synagogues, its old cemetery and its street plan. Kraków Explorers' 2.5-hour walk covers both Kazimierz and Podgórze from $18 as of October 2026.
Yes: Kazimierz is the best-preserved part of Jewish Kraków, and a guide makes sense of streets that look ordinary. The Old Synagogue, from the end of the 15th century, is now a museum; the Remuh is still used for prayer. Pair it with Podgórze across the river, where the ghetto was. The Kraków Explorers walk is rated 4.8 from 1,965 reviews.
Just under 70 km west of central Kraków, about an hour by road; a guided visit with transport takes 7 to 8 hours. The guided part inside the Memorial lasts about 3.5 hours, and the Memorial's visitor service sets its pace. Royal Cracow's guided visit from Kraków includes the transport, with hotel pickup on some options.
Not always, but entry must be reserved in advance online, and most visitors from Kraków go with a museum guide. The Memorial sells its entry cards only online at visit.auschwitz.org, not at the gate, and free individual entry also has to be reserved. A guided visit with transport removes the planning: the Royal Cracow visit costs from $20 as of October 2026.
The Memorial recommends the visit for those aged 14 and over. It is a recommendation, not a rule, and parents decide. The tour with hotel pickup on this page is not suitable for children under 12. For a family day in Kraków, the Kazimierz walk is the gentler introduction.
A passport or ID card whose name matches the name on the booking exactly. The listings warn that entry can be refused if the names differ, and that each visitor's full name is required in advance. Enter every name carefully when you reserve the guided visit.
Yes, but it is a 17-hour day. AB Everest Travel's trip collects you in Warsaw, takes you by express train to Kraków, runs the guided visit and allows about three hours in Kraków, from $168 as of October 2026. The museum tickets themselves cannot be refunded. See the train trip from Warsaw.
Every day except Tuesday; Thursday entry to the core exhibition is free. The museum opens at 10:00 and closes at 18:00, at 20:00 on Saturdays, and the last entry to the core exhibition is two hours before closing. The museum's own ticket, with an audio guide, costs $12 as of October 2026.
Yes: in Warsaw, Rosotravel's private Jewish Warsaw tour covers the ghetto, the Jewish cemetery and the museum in two to five hours, from $99 a person as of October 2026, rated 4.7 from 155 reviews; in Kraków, Excursions City's Schindler's Story walk through Kazimierz and the ghetto can be reserved as a private group, from $28. See the private Warsaw tour.
No listed tour does: none of the tours here goes to a family's own town, but a private guide can be hired to travel there with you. Before you go, search Jewish Records Indexing - Poland (jri-poland.org), an index of the Jewish birth, marriage and death records held in the Polish State Archives, and the State Archives' own portal of scanned records, szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl; indexes of records more than 100 years old are online. The private tours guide compares what private guides cost.
Any month: the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is open all year except 1 January, 25 December and Easter Sunday, but its winter days are short, with entry until 14:00 in December and 15:00 in January, against 18:00 from April to May and 19:00 from June to August. The Memorial advises reserving its guides at least two months ahead. Kraków's Kazimierz and Warsaw's POLIN Museum are open all year. See the guided visit from Kraków.
