Morocco: The Mellahs, and a Community That Stayed
Casablanca, Fes, Marrakech, Rabat and Tangier, with the tours compared.
Jews have lived in what is now Morocco for more than 2,000 years; the community numbered more than 250,000 at its peak and about 2,100 today, most of them in Casablanca, according to the World Jewish Congress. What a heritage traveller comes to see is the mellah, the walled Jewish quarter of each old city, with its synagogues and cemeteries, and the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca. Morocco’s 2011 constitution names the Hebraic among the influences that enrich the national identity, beside its Arab-Islamic, Amazigh and Saharan-Hassani components. The best-rated walk that includes a mellah is Golden Atlas Experiences’ Marrakech tour of the palaces and the Jewish quarter, from $53 in current promotion (usually $70) a person as of October 2026, rated 4.9 from 9 reviews.

What Visitors Say
"Ibrahim was an excellent guide. He let us discover the essentials of the city at our own pace. A professional guide who is well-informed and speaks Spanish fluently."
"our tourist guide sheriff was good. knows everything and took us to bahia palace, Ben yousef madrasa instead of el badi as el badi was under construction. although it's quite hot and exhausting because lots of walking but we enjoyed it very much. highly recommended this tour if you are planning to visit marrakesh"
"“Abdou the Great” was our live guide. He was the best in all of Marrakech, and we had a lot of guides. He was funny, nice, and very informative! I highly recommend choosing this activity, as you learn so much more than if you were just doing self-guided tours. It's certainly more expensive, but it's well worth the price! I hope you get our guide! Thanks again."
"Abdo is a very cheerful and friendly live guide, with excellent knowledge of his craft. The guided visit was extensive and interesting. Thanks to him, we really got to know Marrakech from a different side, especially the authentic side of the city. The tour of the markets was not really necessary for us personally, but that does not mean that we are not very satisfied with the guided visit. In short: a very nice experience and definitely recommended!"

Morocco keeps a small Jewish community, about 2,100 people in a 2020 estimate cited by the World Jewish Congress, and its synagogues, cemeteries and the Museum of Moroccan Judaism receive visitors. The 2011 constitution names the Hebraic among the influences that enrich the national identity, beside its Arab-Islamic, Amazigh and Saharan-Hassani components. For safety, read your own government's current travel advice for Morocco before you go.
The Jewish quarter of a Moroccan city, usually walled and built close to the royal palace; the mellah of Fes, from the 15th century, is the oldest. Few Jewish families live in the mellahs today, and the synagogues and cemeteries are what the tours visit. The Marrakech walk includes the Mellah.
It is in Casablanca's Oasis district and closes on Saturdays and on Jewish holidays; Premium Transfers & Tours' guided visit includes its entry, with the Hassan II Mosque and hotel pickup, from $47 as of October 2026. Yes: the World Jewish Congress dates the Jewish presence in what is now Morocco to more than 2,000 years ago, before Roman rule. The communities grew again after 1492, when Jews expelled from Spain, and later from Portugal, settled in Moroccan cities beside the older communities. Morocco Travel Experts' Casablanca heritage tour visits three of Casablanca's synagogues and the old Jewish cemetery.
Moroccan Jews, part of the wider Sephardic and North African Jewish world; historians distinguish the toshavim, the older communities, from the megorashim, the exiles from Spain and Portugal and their descendants. The Sephardic route guide covers the Spanish and Portuguese side of the story.
