Prague and Terezín: What to See and Which Tour Opens It
Josefov's synagogues and cemetery, and the memorial at Terezín, with the guided tours compared.
In the Czech Republic a Jewish heritage trip means Prague’s Josefov, the former Jewish town beside the Old Town, and the Terezín Memorial, about 60 km north of the city. Josefov’s synagogues, the Old-New Synagogue among them, and the Old Jewish Cemetery are all on the Jewish Museum’s basic ticket, CZK 600 (about $27) for an adult at the museum’s own ticket office, checked October 2026. The guided tour with the most entries is Get Prague Guide’s Jewish Quarter walk, from $74 a person as of October 2026, which opens the Pinkas, Maisel, Spanish and Old-New synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery, rated 4.7 from 4,512 reviews.

What there is to see
- The Jewish Museum’s sites. The Maisel, Pinkas, Klausen and Spanish synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery are all on one Prague Jewish Town ticket, sold by the Jewish Museum in Prague; the Klausen Synagogue now holds temporary exhibitions, open as their programme allows. The Spanish Synagogue, its walls covered in gilded Moorish patterns, is the one most visitors remember. Get Prague Guide’s walk opens the Pinkas, Maisel, Spanish and Old-New synagogues and the cemetery with a licensed guide; the Klausen Synagogue stays on the ticket for you to see on your own. See dates →
- The Old-New Synagogue. Run by the Jewish Community of Prague, not the museum, and still used for prayer. Since 1 January 2024 it has been on the same Jewish Town ticket, and separate admission is no longer sold (the Jewish Museum in Prague, checked October 2026).
- Terezín. The fortress town the occupiers turned into a ghetto, with the Ghetto Museum, and the Small Fortress beside it, used as a Gestapo prison. The memorial site is about 60 km north of Prague.

The guided walk is the better choice on a first visit: the cemetery and the small synagogues explain little on their own, and the entries alone cost much of the price. jewish-walking-tour.com compares the other Josefov tours guide by guide.
The resold ticket suits a second visit, or anyone who prefers to read the exhibitions slowly: it adds a 20-minute introduction in English. The museum’s own basic ticket, CZK 600 (about $27, checked October 2026), covers the same sites without it.
For Terezín, Get Prague Guide’s visit includes the Small Fortress with a guide; Premiant’s adds the Ghetto Museum and the National Cemetery. The crematorium is closed on Saturdays. Local Historian Tours takes up to six people by car with a historian of the Holocaust.
Before you go
- Saturdays and holidays. The Jewish Museum’s sites and the Old-New Synagogue close on Saturdays and on Jewish holidays; the Old-New Synagogue also closes an hour before Shabbat begins on Fridays. In autumn 2027 they close for Rosh Hashanah on 2 and 3 October (from the evening of 1 October) and Yom Kippur on 11 October (from the evening of 10 October), by the Hebrew calendar; the museum publishes its full list each year.
- Dress. Cover shoulders and knees for the synagogues; men are asked to cover their heads where prayer still takes place.
- The Spanish Synagogue by night. The one-hour concerts, classical and Jewish music by players from the Prague FOK Symphony Orchestra, are a way to see its interior in the evening, from $48. See the concert dates →

"Stephen was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and interesting. It was a bit disappointing that we weren’t able to get into the one of the synagogues that we paid for, because there was an event."

Shabbat meals are reserved in advance, by Thursday, and every visitor passes a security check. The Community's kosher shop is in the same building.
