Vienna: Where to Go and Which Walk to Take

The inner city, the museum's two sites and Leopoldstadt, with the walks compared.

Jewish Vienna is two places: the inner city around the Stadttempel and Judenplatz, where the medieval Jewish quarter stood, and Leopoldstadt, the second district across the Danube Canal, the centre of Jewish life before 1938 and again today. The Stadttempel, from 1826, was the only Viennese synagogue to escape destruction in the November Pogrom of 1938. The best-rated walk is wolfgang tours’ Jewish History and Hitler’s Rise, from $43 a person as of October 2026, rated 5.0 from 17 reviews, which starts at the Stadttempel and passes Judenplatz.

What there is to see

  • The Stadttempel. Vienna’s main synagogue, in Seitenstettengasse, built in 1826 by the architect Josef Kornhäusl.
  • Judenplatz. The square of the medieval Jewish quarter, with Rachel Whiteread’s Holocaust memorial, unveiled in 2000, a concrete library whose books face inward, and the Museum Judenplatz, with the excavated remains of the medieval synagogue.
  • The Jewish Museum, Dorotheergasse. The main house, in a palace near St. Stephen’s Cathedral, on Jewish history, religion and traditions in Austria.
  • Leopoldstadt. The second district, the centre of Jewish Vienna before 1938 and still the centre of Jewish life in the city today.

Figures as of October 2026: the shape of the market, not a quote. Check the price and the conditions on the date you choose.

wolfgang tours is the walk for English speakers with one afternoon. Its reviews are few but all five-star, and it covers sensitive ground, the Holocaust and the war years, plainly.

Vienna Walks and Talks has the longest review record, 139 reviews at 4.9, and goes into Leopoldstadt, but it is guided in German.

The museum tickets are the cheapest way in and the best second step after a walk: the ticket covers both sites. jewish-walking-tour.com compares the Vienna walks in more detail.

Before you go

  • Saturdays and holidays. The Stadttempel is a working synagogue and does not receive visitors on Shabbat or on Jewish holidays; check its visiting times before you plan a visit inside.
  • Security. Expect a security check at the synagogue and at community buildings, and carry ID.
  • The museums. Allow a morning for both sites; the ticket is sold by the museum itself, with an audio guide in English or German.

Choose a Date

Most tours on this site cancel free up to 24 hours ahead (checked October 2026). Synagogues and Jewish museums close on Saturdays and on Jewish holidays, so check the date against the venue's calendar before you reserve. Starting from $43 per person.
