Private Jewish Tours in Europe: What They Cost, Country by Country

What a Jewish heritage tour costs, from tip-based walks to private guides, city by city: what the price adds at each step and when private is worth it. Checked October 2026.

Updated October 2026

A group walk is the best value on a first visit; a private guide is worth its price for a family or a group of four or more, for a slow pace, or where the guide’s knowledge is the whole point. In most cities the price climbs in four steps: an exterior walk that works for tips, a group walk with the entries included, a small group or a specialist, and a private guide. What each step adds is predictable, and so is the point at which private stops being a luxury.

A private guide can open the route to the courtyards and addresses that matter to you; a group walk follows its own.

The four steps of the price

StepTypical priceWhat you getExample
Tip-based or exterior walkA few dollars plus tips, or about $15 to $35The history of the quarter, from outsideBudapest’s Past and Present walk, $2.70 in current promotion (usually $3.37) plus tips
Group walk with entriesAbout $50 to $75The same guide, and the doors openedPrague’s Jewish Quarter walk, $74 with every entry
Small group or specialistAbout $60 to $120Ten people or fewer, or an expert guideLisbon’s walk led by an archaeologist, $87
Private guideAbout $90 to $250 a person, or $240 to $500 a groupYour route, your pace, your questionsPrague’s private Jewish Quarter tour, $242 for up to six

Prices are the tours’ from prices, checked October 2026.

The biggest jump in value is the second step. In Prague, Budapest and Venice the entries alone cost a good part of the group price, and the cheaper walks stay outside. A walk with the entries included is usually the better buy than an exterior walk plus tickets bought separately.

City by city

Prague. The Jewish Quarter ticket costs $51 in current promotion (usually $54) with a 20-minute introduction; the guided walk with every entry, $74; Darina Zelikova’s private tour, $242 for up to six, entries paid on the day. For two people the guided group walk is better value; for five or six, private costs about the same per head and keeps the group together.

Budapest. Triptobudapest’s exterior walk costs $2.70 in current promotion (usually $3.37) plus tips; Hidden Treasures of Hungary’s walk with three entries, $61; Cityrama’s private three hours, $160 a person, entries extra. The middle option is the one most visitors want.

Figures as of October 2026: the shape of the market, not a quote. Check the price and the conditions on the date you choose.

  • Per-group pricing. Several private tours are priced for the whole group, not per person: Prague’s for up to six, Toledo’s for up to ten, Vienna Bespoke’s for up to twenty-five. Divide before you compare.
  • Family history. If you are tracing where your own family lived, a private guide can build the route around addresses and names; a group walk cannot.
  • Pace. A private guide stops when you need to. For older travellers this alone can justify the cost; see heritage tours for seniors.
  • Language. Private tours offer more languages, including Hebrew in Barcelona, Rome and Lisbon.

What the price never includes

  • The Anne Frank House. Sold only on annefrank.org, by no tour; the guided walks around it, private ones included, are sold for any date. See the private Anne Frank walk →
  • Some entry tickets. Several private tours, and the Venice synagogue tour, list entries as extra; check the “not included” line.
  • Tips. Optional everywhere, and the whole income of the tip-based walks.
